Top 10 ABA CEU Topics to Prioritize in 2026 (and the Rule Changes You Need to Know)
By LaKeysha Cobbs-Hayes, MA, BCBA · Last reviewed 2026-10-14 · 8 min read
Every BCBA needs 32 CEUs per cycle. The real question is whether those 32 hours change what you do on Monday morning. This post covers the requirements first, including two changes many people have missed, and then the ten topics I'd prioritize this cycle.
The requirements, in plain language
According to the BCBA Handbook, BCBAs need 32 CEUs every two-year recertification cycle, including:
- 4 CEUs in ethics, and
- 3 CEUs in supervision if you supervised RBTs, BCaBAs, or trainees at any point during the cycle.
The ethics and supervision CEUs count toward your 32. They aren't added on top.
Change 1: Supervision goes from 3 to 4 CEUs in 2027
Under the 2027 BCBA requirements, the supervision requirement increases to 4 CEUs for BCBAs who supervise. The total stays at 32, and ethics stays at 4. If your recertification date falls in 2027 or later, plan for the extra supervision CEU now.
Change 2: Ethics now includes cultural and contextual responsiveness
The BACB dropped a planned separate DEI requirement. Instead, it expanded the ethics category to include events on cultural and contextual responsiveness. To qualify, most of the event has to focus on ethics or cultural responsiveness. A course that mentions the ethics code briefly doesn't count.
Change 3: Self-paced CE must monitor participation (July 1, 2026)
The 2026 ACE Provider Handbook now requires asynchronous (self-paced) events to measure participation, for example with at least three knowledge questions per CEU. Code words embedded in a video, time logged in, or a checkbox saying you watched no longer count as the only measure. Before you buy self-paced CE, ask the provider how they monitor participation.
The 10 topics I'd prioritize
I chose these because they address problems I see in clinics again and again, and because each one has solid research behind it.
1. Ethics in everyday decisions
Not a review of the code, but practice applying it: multiple relationships in small communities, social media, payer pressure, and what to do when the plan doesn't match the client's needs. This also covers your 4 required ethics CEUs.
2. Cultural and contextual responsiveness
Now part of the ethics category, this means adapting goals, communication, and caregiver training to the family in front of you. Look for courses that give you something to do, not just something to think about.
3. Supervision that builds skills
If you supervise, you'll need 4 supervision CEUs starting in 2027. Choose courses that teach behavioral skills training, performance feedback, and competency checks. A survey update by Blackman and colleagues (2022) found that fewer than half of supervisors had received supervisory skills training, and only about half of those said it prepared them.
4. Assent and compassionate care
Clients and families notice how services feel, not just whether goals are met. Taylor, LeBlanc, and Nosik (2019) argued that compassion and collaboration with families directly affect treatment outcomes. Look for CEUs that cover recognizing assent withdrawal and adjusting in the moment.
5. Practical functional assessment
Many clinicians learned functional analysis in school but rarely run one in practice. Hanley, Jin, Vanselow, and Hanratty (2014) described an interview-informed, synthesized approach that produced meaningful improvements in children's problem behavior. A course on practical FA methods is worth your time.
6. Organizational behavior management (OBM)
When staff don't follow a plan, the problem is often the system, not the person. OBM courses teach you to diagnose performance problems and fix the conditions around them. That's useful whether you supervise two RBTs or run a clinic.
7. Caregiver training that works
Handing out written materials isn't training. Choose CEUs that teach behavioral skills training with families, including in-home practice and planning for generalization.
8. Documentation and payer compliance
Audits and denied claims often trace back to documentation. A strong course covers medical necessity language, objective notes, and how to show progress clearly.
9. AI and technology ethics
Clinics are adopting AI tools quickly. A 2026 survey of BCBAs by Alqunaysi, Meadan, and Loya found cautious views, with concerns about ethical decision-making, individualization, and client confidentiality. Learn the risks before your organization picks a tool for you.
10. Meaningful goals and social validity
Wolf (1978) made the case decades ago that the people we serve should judge whether our goals and outcomes matter. It's still one of the most important questions in practice. Courses on social validity help you write goals families care about.
How to plan your cycle
- Log in to your BACB account and check your recertification date and the CEUs already recorded.
- Lock in the required categories first: 4 ethics, plus 3 or 4 supervision if you supervise.
- Pick one practice problem you want to solve this cycle, then choose CEUs that address it.
- Spread your CEUs out. Two or three a quarter is far easier than 20 in your last month.
- Keep your certificates in one folder outside your work computer.
